BU Meet - GBM ENews
BU Meet Report
As hosts of the BU meet we want to express our thanks to everyone who swam in
and supported the meet, including those who traveled some distance from around
the US, from Canada, and in one case from Russia to participate. We also wanted
to thank our tireless team of meet officials. Last, but not least, our thanks
and compliments on behalf of all the participants and the New England LMSC to
Joan Rajfer and the BU meet management team for their excellent meet management.
We look forward to seeing you again next year.
GBM Team Report
One of our swimmers was talking at the BU meet with a friend who swims with one
of the Boston teams.
'So you're with Great Bay Masters…is your team based in Boston?'
'No, we're based in seacoast New Hampshire.'
'That figures, you guys are way too FRIENDLY and FUN to be a Boston team!'
With apologies to our friends in Boston, this little story perfectly sums up the
GBM vibe at the BU meet. We are friendly, we did have fun, and we also swam FAST!
Thanks to the indefatigable efforts of our Motivation Man and team President
Darwin, GBM assembled a solid team of 41 swimmers to travel South for the annual
Duel in the Pool with our friendly rivals from Maine/Winterfell, the Blue
Lobstahs. Despite a valiant effort by a Maine Masters team reduced by
obligations at the Bowdoin meet (or on the Night Watch defending the northern
Wall from the wildings), GBM wrested back the club trophy after a spirited
weekend of swimming competition. Team GBM included battle tested vets as well
as first time meet swimmers, who all contributed to our impressive points total
of 3,303. As usual the heart of the team's strong performance was in the
Relays, where we notched up a stupendous 11 First, 6 Second, and 8 Third place
finishes.
The meet attracted almost 500 entrants, including an impressive roster of elite
masters swimmers who took down 6 world and 14 national masters records. There
were many highlights for team GBM. The biggest splash was made by team stalwart
Dick, who marked his 'ageing up' meet by beating the old New England record in
the 200IM and with a team best haul of 147 individual points, 6th highest among
men at the meet. Congratulations Dick on your great swimming!
The weekend started with an impressive turnout of 9 GBM swimmers for the 800 on
Friday night. A similarly impressive 9 swimmers also competed on the 400IM
later in the weekend, and a further 2 swims in the 200Fly to round out the
'tough trio'. Brett G, Crystie, Steve M and Steve P doubled up on the 800 and
400IM. Keep hanging tough guys and gals! There were many great swims,
including huge time drops for Kasia – 25 secs on her 400IM! – a number of near
bests for Gail P and a bold 100Fly by Pat C. King sandbagger prize goes to
Jerry, whose fine 100Back was 9 seconds faster than his seed time.
GBM was pleased to welcome new members, and to welcome back a number who have
not swum in a meet for a while, including David L - who flew up from Florida to
swim with us - Buzz, Cristophe, Elizabeth, Manya and Rachel C. JenZ, Julia and
Steve K responded to the last push recruiting effort to make big contributions
to team victory.
Our swimming seniors continue to lead the team from the front. The 240+ relays
contributed 4 wins and Aagje(102), Phil(117) and were also high point
centurions. Other high point centurions were team hero Crystie(119), Bart
(104.5), Guy (108), Steve M(102). Kirk and Jerry were also just narrowly below
100 points and both participated in 4 winning relays.
Thanks everyone for joining us on deck - next time bring friends!
New President
Darwin has been an energetic and enthusiastic leader for Team GBM for a number
of years, bringing his generous spirit, big personality and a large dose of fun
to our team. Please join us in thanking Darwin for his wonderful contributions
to our team. Darwin will be standing down from the Presidency at the end of the
year, though we are pleased that he will remain on the Board as VP, continuing
his distinctive recruitment and team motivational program. Guy has been elected
by the Board to succeed Darwin in the new year.
Our team hero Coach Crystie has been the key figure in team GBM for some time
now. Her quiet but forceful presence on deck has challenged us all to work that
little bit harder, and her exceptional prowess in the pool inspires us to
improve our own swimming skills. Her efforts have been central to the
continuing success of the BU meet and our other club events throughout the year.
She has also fostered a growing social vibe among the team that continues to
build the community of our club.
BIG THANKS TO CRYSTIE AND DARWIN!!
Finally, we should never overlook that we are fortunate to have many members who
support the club through their work on the Board or volunteering at club events
or supporting the club in other ways. We would like to thank all of them for
their contributions and particularly Dick Arnold (our club Secretary) and Phil
Read (Treasurer) for their many years of service to the club.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS TEAM!!!!

Join us ON DECK at BU!!
We have 7 days until the closing date for BU entries. So far we have lucky 13
GBM entries. Two years ago we had 55 swimmers. Let's get another big GBM team
on deck for this meet!
We are part of a great team. This is our meet. But that's not the reason I
want you to swim. I want you to swim because this is our PARTY and I promise
you will have FUN!
We don't need you to swim a full program, we simply need you to join us on deck
having a good time. Come to swim and have a laugh. Come and be a one day relay
wonder. One day makes a HUGE difference. Do you have a holiday party that
weekend? NO PROBLEM! Just come to OUR party and then go to YOUR party! Or you
can follow the tried and trusted GBM Xmas hangover remedy – go to your party
Saturday and then come to our party Sunday. Ryan swears by it!
I promise you will have a GOOD TIME and be glad you came.
I met Sarah 3 years ago while training at PIP. After seeing her swim I threw on
my GBM closer cap. She said she used to swim for Cambridge masters but wasn't
interested in masters anymore. My persistence got her to swim practice and after
several NO WAY!!s Sarah finally committed to one day at a meet. After her last
relay, she thanked me. She said she never would have known the fun our team had
if I hadn't pushed her along. The following year on her one day at Harvard Sarah
set a New England record with team mates Nicole, Todd and Gary. She is a
guarantee to swim one day at both Championship meets and a guarantee to have
FUN! Thank you Sarah for being a team player.
I am going on Saturday to see Dick swim backstroke with his sandals on.
I still chuckle about Dick's 100 last year. He didn't remember he was wearing
them until he got back to his seat.
We will miss Brett the Beast. He is injured and will be out of the water this
year. He wishes he was in. But he may come down just to have fun on deck and
swing by Kelly's roast beef on the way home.
Please don't sit home wondering how the team is doing on that weekend. You will
be the one who makes a difference. Remember that Summer Olympics INSPIRATION!
We are all a part of Great Team - come out and swim for our team, for our
extremely dedicated coach, and for a GOOD TIME with your TEAMMATES.
Let's Go!! Every swim counts!!
Go GBM!!!

GBM - Important Message from Darwin
Relays Win Meets!!
Hello Team!
It has been an honor to lead an exceptional club like GBM. Like many of you, my
plate is overflowing with responsibility. Consequently I will be stepping down
from the Presidency at the end of the year and I have asked our more than
capable VP Guy Davis to stand for election by the board to take over in 2013. I
will stay on the board and continue my recruiting efforts and continue to be a
big presence on deck at our meets.
Harvard last March was a GBM breakout meet. We saw the reemergence of Jerry
Bailey, Matt Carrico and Jack Ceckler. We also had several newbies enjoy their
return to the pool with great performances.
I watched several swims from our senior team leaders Phil Read 65+ Dick Arnold
80+ Aagjie Caron 65+. They are a true inspiration to our team. They show for
GBM every single Championship meet. The most impressive part is they swim the
full program and relays. I love you guys! Thanks for your commitment to our Team.
The last day of Harvard came. I had the 200 fly and 100 free. I was swimming
injured and was thinking of staying home to enjoy the 80 degree weather and a
frosty beer. After watching our seniors swim Saturday night I had no right to
lay down and quit on my team. I sucked it up and got to the pool at 2:00 for a
short warm up. I hadn't swum the 200 fly in 25 years. I'm glad I did. I was
very pumped to finish the race and I had a great day on deck with my teammates.
BU will be my final meet as the team President. It would be a great honor to
beat Maine and go out with a 2-1 record. Many of us have children, sports, work
and other commitments. I too am not in top shape. I am not asking for the full
program out of you. Relays do win meets. These alone are HUGE FUN and no
pressure. Anything to help the GBM cause is much appreciated. Remember our Super
Seniors who will without a doubt be on deck. Do it for the love of the Sport and
Team!
This is our meet to win. Last year we lost by only 150 points. That is
equivalent of only 5 more swimmers. TAKE THE PLUNGE!
Please show your spouse this email. They may be the difference to help make the
winning decision for GBM and for you!
If you need a ride we will get you there and back. Send us back an email.
I hope to see everyone on deck Dec 7-9. It's our year to beat the Maine Blue
Lobstahs. We have 2 Orlando based members flying in to swim for us. We are the
hosts of this meet – please help us make it a success!
I do Love this Team!
GO GBM!!!

Open Water Swimming
A few notes on Safety and Preparation for OW swimming
At this time of year a few of our hardier swimmers enjoy getting out into the
lakes and the ocean for some outdoor fun. We thought it might be a good idea to
suggest a few things to consider, particularly if you are a less experienced
swimmer. GBM does not run OW training sessions, but some of the team swim
together informally and you can connect with them and other seacoast area OW
swimmers via the GBM Facebook page.
Remember - SAFETY IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!!!
Remember - SAFETY IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!!!
(yes, said twice deliberately for emphasis!)
This is obviously the overriding concern for us all. Open Water swimming is
hazardous and requires considerable thought and preparation to minimize risks.
Please take time to understand the risks and to prepare yourself for open water
swimming. Conditions vary enormously depending on the venue, weather, etc.
Here are a few basic comments on safety (particularly relating to ocean
swimming) – please read up thoroughly on safety before you start open water
swimming and keep personal safety your priority:
- Ocean swimming has unique challenges because of the surf, the tides and the
currents, and distant weather conditions can have a significant effect on local
conditions even on apparently calm days. Conditions can also change rapidly.
It is important to know what to do in the event of rip tides, or similar
challenges, and to always remain well within one's own capabilities.
- Choose a good, safe location. BIG HAZARDS ARE BOATS, ROCKS and SURFERS. Be
aware of the tidal variations. Low tide can expose hazards that are not present
at high tide. Rye beach is relatively sheltered, warm (for NH! ie less cold) and
hazard free. In the summer it is guarded. Even so there are important safety
issues to be aware of. Swimming is usually beyond the surf line parallel to the
beach. This helps reduce the hazard from surfer traffic and gives calmer water
while swimmers remain reasonably close to shore. BE VERY CAUTIOUS ABOUT SURFERS
IF THEY ARE IN THE WATER – YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE HIT BY A FAST MOVING BOARD WITH
A SURFER ON TOP OF IT! ALWAYS BEWARE BOAT TRAFFIC.
- Be very aware of and become knowledgeable about conditions, hazards etc. where
you swim. Talk to the beach lifeguards, heed their advice and let them know
what you are doing.
- In the ocean, wet suits are required by all but the hardiest. There are suits
made specifically for swimming which allow good freedom of movement for arms and
shoulders while providing thermal protection. Wetsuits also add buoyancy which
improves safety. If you get cold, come in right away and warm up before it can
become a problem. Look up the warning signs of hypothermia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypothermia. Get help if needed.
- Wetsuits. There is now a good range of choice for swimming wetsuits from a
number of manufacturers. Many swimmers are now using TYR wetsuits, which are
very fast and comfortable, see www.tyr.com , or Xterra wetsuits as a more
affordable option, see http://www.xterrawetsuits.com/. Taking good care of your
wetsuit can considerably extend its useful life. To ease getting into suit, you
can put plastic bags on your feet – this will allow your feet to slide into the
wetsuit legs easily. Experiment with fit. Find out where the chafe spots are
and adjust fit to make sure the suit is not too tight at those places. Make
sure it is not too tight over the shoulders and restricting your swimming
movement. Use plenty of 'Glide' or a similar lubricant around the neck and on
other chafe spots (eg under arms). Vaseline/petroleum jelly is also good to
protect chafe areas, but be careful about its affect on neoprene – it is bad for
neoprene and can void wetsuit warranty. Repair wetsuit damage immediately
before it spreads. Follow good practice on wetsuit care. Read the instructions
provided by the manufacturer. Also,
http://www.ehow.com/how_2058333_care-wet-suit.html
- Less experienced swimmers should limit to swimming when the beach is guarded
and conditions are benign. Find more experienced swimmers to swim with for
safety cover and to help you gain experience.
- Take things slowly as you build up experience. Keep well within your limitations.
- Always swim in groups (3 or more preferred) so you can help one another if
needed. Have a safety plan.
- Wear brightly colored swim caps which are visible to each other and from the
beach. Always know where all other swimmers in your group are. Have a person
on the beach monitoring progress who can get assistance if needed. If you have
kayaking friends, ask them to join you and act as your 'safety boat'.
- Swimming with a safety buoy or safety can increases your visibility to boats
and surfers and provides extra safety. (See below for a new safety aid)
- Keeping warm, a few suggestions. 1. Good pre-workout fuel. Suggestions:
boiled egg, oatmeal, banana, coffee. 2. On land warm up and stretch – raise
core temperature and get loose. 3. Get an open water swim hat (neoprene) or use
multiple hats to reduce high rate of heat loss from head. 4. Reduce initial
cold shock by bringing container of warm water to pour into your wetsuit before
you enter the water. (Don't scald yourself!) Also:

http://www.active.com/swimming/Articles/An_open_water_swimmer_s_formula_for_race-day_fuel.htm?page=2
(If you are competing in a longer race you may need to fuel during the race.
Doing this well is an art, and benefits from study and personal experimentation.
For a race the length, for example, of the Nubble LC, many will not refuel
during the race, but if you are a likely to be in the water for an extended
period and/or are prone to cold, you may want to take some gel packs with you to
keep the furnace stoked! Longer races require a support boat and a feeding plan.)

New Starting Blocks for Portsmouth Pool
Request for support: Funds for New Starting Blocks for Portsmouth Pool
Hi Team!
The Portsmouth Indoor Pool is upgrading its aging starting blocks, primarily
funded by generous contributions from the Cannonball and Portsmouth Swim Teams.
We would like to invite you to support this initiative.
GBM will contribute a matching donation alongside GBM members. We would be very
grateful if individual GBM members, particularly those who are regular users of
the Portsmouth pool, would consider making individual donations to this effort,
to be matched up to $500 by a GBM club donation. A small number of members have
already committed to contribute over $200. Our target is to raise a total of
$1,500 from club funds and individual members.
Donations will be made via the non-profit, Save the Indoor Portsmouth Pool,
Inc., which is a 501(c)(3) organization. We understand that any contributions
will be eligible as tax deductible charitable donations.
Thank you!

GBM Summer Events and Challenge
Summer approaches quickly and with it the long course and open water meet
seasons. We are fortunate to have a number of excellent LC meets and open water
races in easy reach of seacoast swimmers. In the meantime, please support the
JT Clinic on Sunday, May 20, 8-12. The day will include a motivational speech
from the seacoast's very own Olympic swimming legend Jenny Thompson. This is an
opportunity for expert instruction on starts, stroke, turns, technique and
sprints by experienced coaches and Jenny. Sunday is for swimmers age 19 and
over and two of our members, Pete S and Aagje C, will be members of the coaching
team. Further information is available on doverswims.com. Swimmers may
register on the day. Funds raised will support the future of the Dover pools.
NELMSC LCM Champs – Sunday, June 3rd
This year the NELMSC LCM Champs has been moved to our backyard, so let's rally
GBM team for a fun day of LC racing at Harvard's fine Blodgett pool. The meet
is on Sunday, June 3rd. Entries will close when the meet reaches 500 swimmers.
For Meet Info & Online Entry: http://www.meetresults.com/2012/nelmsclcm/
GBM's very own LC meet will be held this year on Sunday July 29th at the Jenny
Thompson pool in Dover. The meet will feature a full program of 50s to 200s,
plus relays, with 400s if time allows. Coach is challenging GBM swimmers to
swim both LC meets, with the aim of establishing race times at the NELMSC
championship and then trying to beat those times at the JT meet after 6 weeks of
LC training. There may be some nifty prizes involved for those who are up for
this challenge!
Upcoming Open Water events
July 14: Nubble Light Challenge, 2.4mi ocean swim

July 21: Peaks to Portland, 2.4mi ocean swim
http://www.cumberlandcountyymca.org/p2p
August 18: 7th Annual Swim & Fin Race for Salem Sound http://www.swimandfin.org/
There will be many GBM swimmers competing in these fun and challenging races!

Congratulations Aagje Caron All American!
We are very pleased to congratulate Aagje on behalf of all of GBM for attaining
USMS All American status in 2011 for her outstanding 400IM swim in which she
ranked number 1 nationally. Aagje also placed highly in a number of other events.
Kudos Aagje on your achievements and for your inspiration in tackling the
toughest of the swimming events, and GOOD LUCK in the FINA World Championships
in Italy in June!!

SCY Champs at Harvard Meet Report
For Full Meet Results: http://www.meetresults.com/2012/nelmscscy/results.shtml
GBM swimmers, sporting our stylish new team T-shirts, made a big splash at the
NE SCY meet at Harvard on March 10 and the weekend of March 16-18. Long time
team stalwarts were joined by many new members and swimmers returning to the
race pool to rack up a solid 2318.5 points over 4 days of racing, for a highly
creditable 3rd placing in the USMS team competition only 323 points behind 2nd
place Bearcat Masters, and a bigger GBM point total than 2010 and 2011.
Many thanks to Dick Arnold and others who posted a number of photos of the
weekend's fun on our team Facebook page, including this one of Dick making our
traditional team celebratory gesture:
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?
fbid=2767825364114&set=oa.10150682067179844&type=1&theater
The foundation for the strong GBM team performance was our 18 relay swims, which
included 6 first place performances. The Men's 25+ teams, including Brett Z,
Tony, Kirk, Rob, Ted, Bart and Ryan, were a particular powerhouse with 3 first
places.
Another team highlight was welcoming so many new swimmers and swimmers returning
after lengthy layoffs. Of particular note were Deb H and Brett G, swimming in
their first Harvard meet with GBM, who were our leading point scorers with 133
and 146 points. Kudos! Joining them in the exclusive "100-plus point club"
were our youthful team stalwarts Aagje and Dick, with Aagje notching up two new
NELMSC records in the process.
Other new and returning members included Matt C, Jerry B and Ted M. Both Jerry
and Matt C, after lengthy absences from the race pool and despite showing signs
of serious overtraining, managed to complete some races longer than 50 yards.
We expect that they will take a more measured approach to training before the
next meet. Ted decided to start with an easy swim (!) and cruised a 400IM in
4:45.
There were many other notable performances which are summarized below, but a
couple deserve particular recognition. Our fearless leader and team Motivation
Man Darwin, despite suffering a shoulder injury 3 weeks before the meet that
prevented him from swimming anything but kick, took on the 200 Fly for the first
time in his adult swimming career, scoring a solid 3rd place. Yet again Team
Hero Coach Crystie took time out from her duties encouraging, advising, cajoling
and organizing team GBM to demonstrated her sublime swim skills in the pool
showing that she doesn't just talk the talk on deck, she swims the swim! (Even
Ryan Lochte would be proud of those turns!)
There was also a strong turnout for distance day, despite the sudden snow storm
that left some parts of the seacoast with up to 8 inches of snow. Karin, Mary
Beth, Brett G, Tara, Crystie, Terry, Steve P, Gail, Amy and Monica all fronted
up for a big swim.

Enter Harvard meet without late fee until 24th!
(New England-LMSC Short Course Yards Championship) has been put off until
Friday, the 24th!!!
Please see the message below is from our friend Bill Ewan, the President of NEM
swim club:
If you haven't signed up for this meet, it is a great chance to do so. Take the
plunge and enjoy the whole affair.
Many years ago I was very interested in masters swimming, but had never entered
a meet and was awed and frightened by many of the great swimmers. I actually
watched the entire Harvard meet, went home and trained and finally entered that
meet the next year. And what did I find. There was no reason to wait!!!
I discovered a whole pool full of people that love swimming, really care about
themselves and their sport, but also care about everyone who joins in. The vets
are missed when they don't show up, and the new kids on the block are celebrated
when they give it good try.
Hope to see you at the Harvard meet!!

Sign in for morning workouts at Portsmouth
workouts at Portsmouth on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. (The fewer the
sign-ins, the more GBM has to pay). If you have attended workouts in the past
but did not sign in, please sign in retroactively when you are next at the
Portsmouth pool.
We are hoping to continue these workouts, but it will be subject to reaching a
sufficient number of swimmers attending consistently or it will be too expensive
for GBM.
Thanks!

Dover pool closes @ 2pm, no practice tonight 1/12/
Monday, January 2, 2012
2012
Portsmouth indoor practice starts tomorrow at 6:30 am. Practices are Tuesdays
and Thursday's from 6:30-7:30am. Here are a few reminders, so that everyone is
clear. Each individual must pay to swim the practice, including pool members.
Only GBM members are eligielable for the $50- 10 swim punch pass. A GBM member
drop in is $7, and non member drop in is $10. All swimmers MUST sign in the
GBM black a.m. practice book when they check in at the front desk. Signing in
is very important, as this tracks attendance and covers pool liability. It
will also help us to determine if we keep the program going after the six week
trial period. The weekly workouts are on the board near the hot tub.
All members can get their GBM USMS membership @ www.greatbaymasters.org.
Click on the join here link, and then Click on Join Online. Put GBM in for
your club affiliation. You can print your card when you are finished.
I would like to thank Guy Davis for accepting the VP position last summer. He
consistently does an exceptional job with that individual responsibility.
Also, I want to thank all of our GBM members;you all are the ones who make GBM
a great and fun Swim Team.
We are very excited to be hosting the Exeter meet on Sunday, February 5th.
Hopefully many of you will attend, as Exeter is a perfect place to return to
the blocks. Let's all strive to make 2012 a year of fun and success as a team.
GO GBM!!!
